One very important thing is to take the diorama out in the sun to get real shadows and different rock colors depending on the daytime. In the morning light the sun is more "softly" (see the Milwaukee PS2 cars), at noon the desert burns and you wish you could rest and have a siesta in the shadow (see the UP Stacktrain with the blue sky), in the afternoon the sun is changing the rock color into a warm and reddish tone like on the picture with the little BN SW1 switcher.

That's a priceless advantage of a diorama over a layout.
